BoatHouse Sail for Sea Cadets
A mother, registering her son for sailing camp, mentioned that he was joining the Sea Cadets and asked if the BoatHouse might host a sail for the group. We agreed and the event was held on May 20. Sixteen Sea Cadets with a couple of Midshipmen and the leader, Jeff Dean and an assistant arrived at about 2 PM.There was a learning session to start with. They first heard about the BoatHouse history and function. We learned that the Sea Cadets is a program for 14-19 year olds, both boys and girls, with a collections of events and activities, such as repelling and study sessions as examples of the diversity. The program provides as outcomes a direct entry as a midshipman in the Navy, a good addition to a resume for college and even a chance for a scholarship. Oddly, there is no sail program in the collection.
The sail was for about an hour with skippers Les Cummings, Rick Eager, Walt Hedrick, Kerry Knowles and Karen Thurston. Although the forecast was for the high winds, we were blessed to have at least decent winds for the sail. Clearly, we added a sorely needed sail event to their program.
