OU NROTC TACKLES SAILING COURSE

Lt. Trevor Bruner, Sailing Instructor for OU’s NROTC, uses a sailing course designed and taught by the Sailing Instructors of the BoatHouse to initiate his Midshipmen to sailing. In addition to meeting the Navy's requirement that officer candidates be sail qualified, Lt. Trevor Bruner had a second objective in developing the class.  NROTC battalions across the country will be holding a number of regional regattas and Bruner wants to field a competitive team.  His hope is that this course will serve as a springboard for a number of the Midshipmen to step up to competitive sailing and help in future regattas.  Although the course was developed primarily for freshmen, it also includes sophomores and juniors who wanted to learn sailing.  According to Haines, who chairs the management and program committees of the BoatHouse, “this is a perfect example of how our partners can maximize their relationship with the BoatHouse.”  Lt. Trevor Bruner reviews and approves the curriculum, while the BoatHouse provides the training facility, materials, boats, and US Sailing Certified instructors from BoatHouse partner organizations. As of  September 2004, five of these classes have been held at the BoatHouse. The course has evolved into a blend of training on dinghies and keelboats.
