On the April 8, 2006, this year’s Lake Sweep of Lake Thunderbird, an annual program of cleaning up the shore line of the lake, began in cold and windy weather. 212 volunteers picked up more than 197 total bags of trash. Of this total, 93 bags were recycled! Most of these participants were from The University of Oklahoma's Big Event. Nine sororities and fraternities participated along with local volunteers and members of the Sea Scouts Ship 5790.
The Lake Sweep is a program of Oklahoma Water Watch Program of Oklahoma Water Resources Board and was run by Karina Rivas-Careaga. The Oklahoma Sailing Club members under supervision by Mike Klatt, Faculty Advisor, covered registration and sign off. Julie Tarver, Park Naturalist provided instructions to volunteers. Lake Sweep was hosted again at the Lake Thunderbird BoatHouse where members Chad Cox, Roger Elliott, and Phil Moershel helped.
Considering the horrendous weather, a large section of the north shore
of the lake was cleaned, so the event was a successful Big Event! Norman
owes a Big Thanks to all volunteers.
